On eve of Emmys, stars celebrate accomplishments

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Sure, Sunday night's 60th Annual Emmy Awards show is the big event in Hollywood this weekend, but the Emmy eve parties are pretty swell too. An about-town sampling:

GOING WITH THE CHAMPAGNE FLOW: Mary Louise Parker is not stressing about this year's Emmys. At Los Angeles Confidential's pre-Emmy party at Hollywood nightclub Les Deux Saturday night, the lead actress nominee for Showtime's "Weeds" said she'll prepare for Sunday's ceremony by lounging around with friends, drinking champagne and listening to music -- after a bevy of stylists arrive around 3 a.m.

"Usually, you have vibe if you're going to win," the Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe winner said. "I don't really have a vibe."

Parker, who won a supporting actress Emmy in 2004 for HBO's "Angels in America," said the most trying part of any awards show is when the cameras focus on nominees. She said she hopes friend Laura Linney will win the lead actress in a miniseries trophy for HBO's "John Adams." Parker also revealed her Emmy date: Her best friend's husband, "Raising the Bar" actor Currie Graham.

PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS 2008: Mary-Louise Parker Keeps Parents in Emmy Loop

Four-time Emmy nominee Mary-Louise Parker may play a pot-dealing mom on Showtime's Weeds, but celebrating her own success with her real-life mom and dad makes it satisfying for the actress.

"The best part is my parents," Parker, 44, told PEOPLE at Saturday's Los Angeles Confidential pre-Emmy party, which she hosted. "I get to call them if they don't know already, but usually they know before me. That's absolutely the best part."

Parker – who is up against Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Christina Applegate and America Ferrera for comedy actress in a series – has been nominated twice for Weeds. She won an Emmy in 2004 for the miniseriesAngels in America – and can sometimes feel pressured to keep scoring nominations, she told PEOPLE.

"You kind of feel that if you don't get nominated, you're letting people down a little bit," she says.

Her Kids Are Fans

Parker's two children, William, 4, and Caroline, 1, will be watching at home and they are among her biggest fans. Parker adopted Caroline last year, while actor Billy Crudup is the father to William.

"It's just extremely humbling," Parker says about motherhood. "They do [get along with each other]. They're incredible together. They're super sweet!"

Parker's Weeds costar, Kevin Nealon, joked at the party that he's got Parker in his thoughts for Sunday's Emmys.

"I haven't seen her since we taped the last episode, but spiritually I've been sending her good vibes," Nealon says. "I don't know if she's received them, with the airwaves today so crowded."

Weeding Out The Party Scene

Emmy weekend meant plenty of parties leading up to Sunday's big event. "Weeds" star Mary-Louise Parker hosted Los Angeles Confidential Magazine's bash at Les Deux in Hollywood on Saturday night and joked, "I catered it and everything."

Mary-Louise, who has an Emmy for "Angels in America," was prepared to have a good time whether or not she added to her award haul Sunday night.

"Every year it's kind of different," she said. "Last year I was double-nominated and I kind of thought I was gonna lose twice. It was kind of funny, actually. I went with my sister, and we were like, `Yeah! Two for two!"'

Bryan Cranston was sporting a bald head because his character on "Breaking Bad" is going through chemotherapy.

Busy filming, he'd been far-removed from the Emmy hoopla: "I've been working back in New Mexico where there's no trade papers, there's no hubbub, everything is quiet. The biggest question they have there is, `You want green or red chili?"'

Friday night, acting nominees were feted by the Television Academy at a soiree at the Pacific Design Center. Kevin Spacey was among the last to arrive while Sarah Silverman posed for pictures then declined interviews: "I don't feel like talking. Sorry."

I love her honesty.

Zeljko Ivanek of "Damages" was trying to remain cool as a first-time nominee: "So far, I'm managing not to be a total blithering idiot although it's like borderline most of the time. The mouth is moving faster than the brain so it's a little tricky trying to keep up."

Michael Emerson of "Lost" was also enjoying the perks of getting an Emmy nod: "I know it sounds hokey but to be on the short list, to be a nominee, I'm here talking to you, I'm getting the attention, they took my picture - all of that. It suggests that the industry is looking at me, and somebody thinks I'm doing a decent job."

"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm was philosophical about the Emmy competition: "It's not important to win. It really isn't. You stack five actors up on five shows and it's impossible to say, `You're better than him. It's an exercise in futility...(The show) did get a lot of nominations, and that feels good. That to me suggests that our show is resonating with the community at large, and people want to recognize it."

Probably the most relaxed nominee Friday night was Glynn Turman who won his Emmy last weekend for his guest turn on "In Treatment."

"I'm still floatin' baby, I haven't touched the ground," Glynn said.

"It was the most surreal thing I have ever been a part of - ever. To receive this at this stage of my career is really the icing on the cake."
